Tangier’s medina is its historic old town, stretching uphill from Grand Socco to the Kasbah. A walking loop through the lanes connects the square, Petit Socco and the Kasbah Museum, with a terrace overlooking the port and Strait of Gibraltar along the way.

  • Route: Grand Socco, Petit Socco, the market lanes, the Kasbah and a terrace overlooking the port and Strait of Gibraltar.
  • Time: About three hours for the walking loop.
  • Effort: Easy to moderate, with uneven cobbles and several climbs.
  • Museum: The Kasbah Museum is housed in the former Sultan’s Palace.
Start at Grand Socco

Start at Grand Socco

Grand Socco, at the lower edge of Tangier’s medina, is a clear starting point for a walk uphill through the old town. The square is also called Place du 9 Avril 1947, a name that commemorates Sultan Mohammed V’s speech there on April 9, 1947.

From near the square, pass through Bab el Fahs, one of the entrances to the medina. The route then continues toward Petit Socco and into the market lanes. A separate guide to Grand Socco and Tangier’s medina souks focuses on this lower part of the walk.

Walk into the medina souks

Walk into the medina souks

The medina souks lead from the lower old town toward the Kasbah, with narrow lanes and market activity along the route. Keep following the walking route through Petit Socco and the market lanes; the ground rises as you head toward the upper quarter.

Uneven cobbles line the lanes, so walk slowly, leave room for handcarts to pass, and ask permission before photographing people or shop interiors. Mobile coverage can be patchy in the lanes, so downloading an offline map before setting out can help you follow the route.

How do you walk uphill to the Kasbah?

How do you walk uphill to the Kasbah?

From the medina’s lower lanes, continue uphill toward the Kasbah, following the route to Bab Kasbah at the top. The change in elevation is part of the walk: the Kasbah sits on higher ground above the lower medina.

Allow time for the climbs on the cobbled lanes rather than treating the route as a quick crossing. The walking loop described by Discover Tanger links Grand Socco, Petit Socco, the market lanes and the Kasbah before continuing to a terrace with views of the port and Strait of Gibraltar.

Visit the Kasbah Museum

Visit the Kasbah Museum

The Kasbah Museum occupies Dar al-Makhzen, the former Sultan’s Palace, in the eastern part of Tangier’s Kasbah. Its archaeological and ethnographic collections reflect Tangier’s diversity and specificity, according to the Tangier Commune.

The museum’s address is Place de la Kasbah, 90030, Tangier. The Fondation Nationale des Musées gives admission as 30 DH for visitors over 18, 15 DH for ages 12 to 18, and 5 DH for children under 12. You can contact the museum at +212 (0) 5 39 33 44 81.

For another museum stop in the city, the American Legation Museum in Tangier offers a different focus from the Kasbah Museum’s archaeological and ethnographic collections.

Before you go: Opening information is inconsistent, so check the official site before you go.

Pause at the Kasbah terraces

The walking loop ends at a terrace overlooking Tangier’s port and the Strait of Gibraltar. From the Kasbah’s higher ground, this stop follows naturally after the museum and gives you a view over the water before you turn back or continue your day.

How long does the walk take, and what should you bring?

Plan about three hours for the Grand Socco–medina–Kasbah walking loop; Discover Tanger describes the difficulty as easy to moderate. Closed shoes suit the uneven cobbles, and carrying water is advised for the uphill sections.

Appart Hotel Alia is about 31 minutes on foot from Tangier city centre; you can view Appart Alia’s aparthotel rooms when planning your time in the city.
